Seize Boredom

Why do we choose to entertain ourselves if our ultimate goal is to innovate? We spend the vast majority of our lives entertaining ourselves in ways that don't lead us to happiness. We play video games, watch TV and read depressing news articles, all actions that are isolating and thus lead to discontent.
What makes us so intrigued in activities that bring no long term, and very little short term fulfillment? I believe what overrides our innate will to survive, reproduce and live long fulfilled lives is our desire to not be bored. We have very little patience for boredom so we fill any spare time we have with music on the bus, movies late at night and newspapers during breakfast.
Unfortunately this massively halts human progress, our greatest breakthroughs have happened when the mind is left without entertainment because it begins to make connections between past thoughts and experience and allows us to see a larger paradigm.
